Love Your Heart

Your heart is about the size of your fist, but it’s one of the hardest-working muscles in your body. It beats around 100,000 times per day and pumps roughly 2,000 gallons of blood daily. Over the course of a lifetime, that adds up to millions of gallons of blood circulating through your body.

The heart has four chambers and works as a powerful pump, delivering oxygen-rich blood to your organs, tissues, and muscles. It also removes waste products like carbon dioxide. Without this constant circulation, your body simply couldn’t function.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, which is why awareness and prevention are so important during American Heart Month.

How the Heart Works

Your heart is part of the cardiovascular system, which includes your blood vessels and blood. Here’s what happens with each beat:

  • The right side of the heart receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and sends it to the lungs.

  • The lungs add oxygen to the blood.

  • The left side of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood out to the rest of the body.

This continuous cycle keeps your brain sharp, your muscles moving, and your organs functioning properly.

How to Keep Your Heart Healthy

The good news? Many heart conditions are preventable. Small, consistent habits can make a big difference.

1. Move Your Body Regularly
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, like brisk walking, swimming, or cycling.

2. Eat Heart-Healthy Foods
Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit processed foods, excess sodium, and added sugars.

3. Know Your Numbers
Keep track of your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar. Regular check-ups can help catch concerns early.

4. Manage Stress
Chronic stress can impact heart health. Prioritize sleep, relaxation techniques, and activities that help you unwind.

5. Don’t Smoke
Smoking significantly increases the risk of heart disease. Quitting is one of the best things you can do for your heart.

A Simple Reminder

Your heart works nonstop for you. This American Heart Month, take a moment to return the favor. Small changes today can lead to a stronger, healthier heart tomorrow.
