Beat The Heat

We all know that the Texas heat is no joke, and can reach temperatures in the 100s consistently. As the summer heat intensifies, it’s important to find ways to stay cool and comfortable while enjoying the season. By implementing some simple strategies, you can beat the heat and make the most of your summer days.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Drinking an ample amount of water is crucial to beat the heat and prevent dehydration. Dehydration can be life-threatening if you don’t prevent and treat it. Signs of dehydration are feeling thirsty, lightheaded, dry mouth, tiredness, having dark-colored and strong-smelling urine, and passing urine less often than usual. To help prevent this, keep a water bottle with you at all times and aim to drink at least 8 cups of water per day. You can also consume hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and citrus fruits to replenish electrolytes. If you or someone you know starts to experience severe dehydration, seek immediate medical attention.

Dress Smartly

Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing made from breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. These materials allow better air circulation and help wick away sweat, keeping you cooler. Having lightweight material that covers your skin (like a long sleeve linen shirt) will not only keep you cooler, but it will also protect you from the sun. A wide-brimmed hat will also help protect you from the sun and provide shade for your face and neck.

Seek Shade and Limit Sun Exposure

When the sun is at its peak, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., try to stay in shaded areas as much as possible. If you need to be outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. If you’re going to the park, or to the beach, take an umbrella or tent to set up a shady spot throughout the day!

Chill out with Cool Treats

A great way to help cool down is to indulge in a frozen treat! Ice cream, popsicles, or smoothies are all great options to help cool down from the inside out. These are also fun summer activities to try with the kids because you can easily make them at home and experiment with different flavors. You can also incorporate fruit for a healthier option and additional hydration.

Beating the summer heat is all about staying cool, hydrated, and smart. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the summer season while keeping your body comfortable and refreshed. Embrace the warmth, take necessary precautions, and make unforgettable memories during these sunny days!
