New Year, New You: Redefine And Recommit To Health In 2022

lady

For many, the start of the New Year is the perfect time to start fresh and recommit to health goals. Having a new slate is just what you need to establish healthy habits that will carry you into the new year and beyond.

Instead of setting lofty and sometimes unachievable New Year’s resolutions, why not set small, realistic goals that will help make a difference in not only how you feel physically but mentally as well?

Without question, the last two years living in a pandemic world has created unimaginable amounts of stress and anxiety. So, this year when you countdown to 2022, consider setting manageable goals that will not only help you physically but from a mental perspective, too.

Listen to Your Body

No one knows your body better than you. Take time to listen to its cues about hunger, thirst, and most importantly, when it needs rest. If something feels off or is not quite right, don’t delay seeking medical treatment. It could save your life.

Try New Recipes

Cooking at home is generally known to be healthier than eating out. Use the New Year as an excuse for trying some new recipes and exploring your taste buds. You control the ingredients by cooking in your kitchen, and you know exactly what you’re eating. Plus, you may feel a sense of accomplishment for creating a delicious and healthy meal.

Aim to Get More (and Better Sleep)

Sleep is restorative, and we need it to function correctly throughout the day, both physically and mentally. Getting adequate rest also helps keep our immune system in check, giving us the ability to fight off viruses and other illnesses. Setting a regular bedtime and engaging in relaxing activities before going to sleep can increase the quality and quantity of our rest.

Reconnect with Nature

Many of us have felt isolated throughout the pandemic, especially as some of us continue to work remotely. This can perpetuate feelings of depression and anxiety, which can, in turn, take a toll on our physical health. However, spending even a few minutes each week outdoors can provide immense benefits. A local park, hike/bike trail, or even your own backyard offers the best place to unplug.

Engage in Exercise You Actually Like

At the start of the New Year, you often will see people rush to join expensive gyms in hopes of losing weight or kickstarting a new fitness routine. While that is admirable, how often are these efforts actually sustainable? Instead of spending time and money on something you will seldom use, find it to discover an activity you enjoy. Maybe it’s walking the dog for a couple of miles every day, taking a dance class, or going for a bike ride. If you actually look forward to participating in the exercise activity and do not dread it, you will likely develop it as a healthy habit.

Practice Gratitude

If anything, the last couple of years has underscored the importance of practicing gratitude in our daily lives. Being grateful and appreciating even the little things in life have been shown to increase happiness, strengthen our resiliency, and improve our overall outlook on life. Take a little time each day to remind yourself of everything you are grateful for.

Put Down Your Phone

Our phones and other electronic devices have become a necessity of modern-day living. At the same time, however, it’s essential to limit the amount of time you spend on them and instead immerse yourself in offline activities. It’s OK not always to be available.

Take Time for You

There’s nothing selfish about needing some time for self-care. Whether it’s planning a fun or relaxing activity, spending the evening watching your favorite TV show, or immersing yourself in a book, or taking a long walk, it’s time well spent. We cannot be present and take care of others if we do not care for ourselves.
